
Jazmine Sullivan is a native of in and was raised at home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam her mother is an ex-backing singer with Philadelphia International Records. When she was 5 years of age, her dad landed an appointment as the curator for the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and her family moved into the landmark historical building. In 2005 she was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of an alumna of the vocal music department. Sullivan played the contralto for the children's choir . Later just a few years later, she sang as an adult in the choir. Sullivan had limited exposure to secular music. She recalls that she was 11 when someone was requesting her to sing for solos at church. But, she wasn't quite ready to go. "Then the time came that McDonald's had a competition for kids in major cities I was invited to sing 'Accept What God Does' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience loved it". She was just 13 when she performed with Stevie Wonder for his grandson's birthday. Sullivan signed her first contract with Jive Records when she was fifteen. The label recorded her an entire album, but the album wasn't released. Sullivan was eventually dropped from the label. Missy Elliott was her producer for some songs on their debut album. Among them "Backstabbers" of Timbaland and Timbaland, which Elliott created, is the significant moment in their partnership.
